About CME Australian Dollar Futures

Australian Dollar futures contracts offer financial institutions, investment managers, corporations, and private investors a means to manage risks associated with currency rate fluctuation and to take advantage of profit opportunities stemming from changes in currency rates. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange began offering Australian Dollar futures contracts in 1987. optionsXpress offers Australian Dollars futures trading through the CME's Globex electronic trading platform.

The Australian Dollar was introduced in 1966, replacing the Australian Pound. At that time, the value of Australia's national currency was managed in accord with the Bretton Woods gold standard, but in practice the U.S. Dollar was used as a value measure. Today, the value of the Australian Dollar is managed with almost exclusive reference to domestic measures of value, such as the Consumer Price Index.

Australian Dollar futures contracts traded at CME are designed to reflect changes in the U.S. dollar value of the Australian Dollar. Futures contracts are quoted in U.S. Dollars per Australian Dollar, and call for physical delivery at expiration.

The CME has long been considered the world's premier exchange for the trading of currency futures and options. optionsXpress offers access to Australian Dollar futures on the CME Globex system for 23 continuous hours each day.
