Skill Level:

Larry McMillan, Option Strategist

With the introduction of volatility futures in 2004, a whole new concept of trading strategies was made possible. In this talk, we'll start with the elementary definitions of these new products (futures and options on $VIX). Then, we'll show how $VIX and these derivatives can often be used to predict stock market moves (including a trading system with a solid track record). Finally, we'll look at some trading strategies involving these products, including "calendar" spreads (which are different from traditional stock or index option calendars), skew-based spreads, and others.

In this session Tom Busby will cover some of his personal strategies in a bear market. Busby will cover the futures market, including the stock indexes and commodities such as corn, gold and oil.

Options: Speculation or Protection?

Skill Level:
Intermediate
Larry McMillan, Option Strategist

Options are a diverse instrument. They can be used as a speculative vehicle, or they can be used to help protect a portfolio of stocks (and there are many uses in between). In this talk, we'll look at one technique in each category. For speculation, it's using option trading volume and implied volatility to help predict short-term moves in stocks. For protection, it's the "collar" - a strategy that can often be employed with stock, index, or the newest product volatility options.

How Do Option Orders Affect Option Prices?

Skill Level:
Intermediate
Steve Meizinger, ISE

The Black-Scholes Options Pricing Model, or any model for that matter, is not always representative of what happens in real life. These pricing models used to calculate the theoretical value of an option are limited to the following numerical inputs: strike price, time remaining until expiration, price of the underlying stock, volatility of the underlying stock, interest rates, and dividends. Special guest Steve Meizinger from the ISE will discuss option pricing, volatility, market making and how option theory is used in real life market situations.

Options as a Contrary Indicator

Skill Level:
Intermediate
Larry McMillan, Option Strategist

The vast majority of option traders are wrong at major turning points in the market - or even for individual stocks and futures, for that matter. Learn how to use option volume and price data as a contrary indicator. Volume data is typically analyzed as "put-call ratios," while price data is normally viewed in terms of "implied volatility." Thus, $VIX and other volatility measures will be discussed in the context of contrary trading.
